Old Spice manipulating men’s urge to be powerful
Old Spice commercials have been going on for a long time now. Body wash and deodorant made manly are their go-to theme. Showing customers an insanely muscular man and making him the jack of all trades. This has worked out for them very well because it grabs many people’s attention. The ad goes on and makes it seem as if you are not using Old Spice that you are a weak man and need Old Spice to become the strong handsome man just like Terry cruse, Isaiah Mustafa, and the very rich and gentleman-like man Deon Cole. And because these men use Old Spice they get women and amazing skin This ad makes you buy their products because it makes you feel unmanly if you do not use Old Spice. Their ads are based on men needing or wanting to be prominent and being manly.
The targeted audience for these ads are men who want to have more power in their lives and who are not confident. Making them feel that if they buy their product all their problems will go away. saying this while yelling the entire time “Old Spice body spray will make you feel so powerful it will blow your mid off right in front of your face!”, making their product make you feel more powerful. These tactics easily persuade unconfident men who are looking for anything to boost their confidence. Demographically Old Spice is targeting the weak men who lack confidence but also appeals to the men who are big and strong who have a lot of confidence. This is because the men who are big and strong want something to relate too and being able to relate to a man who is muscular and has fame and a girl is pleasing to many guys. making them also want to have the product. psychographically they low confident men get the product to become big and strong so they get the girls. And for the already strong men and boys, you get it to smell good for the girls because that’s what they think OldSpice can give them.
The Old Spice ads enforce the norms of men wanting to be powerful and manly and those who do not use their product are stupid. This is making men looking desperate to be more manly because some men have to try very hard too. The ad enforces the norm the men have to have big muscles and be louder than others because in every commercial the character has his shirt off while yelling. I think this ad is not as bad as we think. No, the ad does not actually say that men that don’t use the products are weak but it is informed. All of their ads show a false representation of men because it is saying you will be powerful and manly if you use their product. But this ad shows how to be confident in your own skin because a lot of the time the character in the commercial can be doing something weird and showing that you can be confident in anything.
